Here’s a story. This following discussion took place at a trade fair for about 1 year ago. This was between me and a competitor a fellow design business owner*. We discussed manufacturing…
I: so where do you manufacture your goods?
The other designer: in a country in XX.
I: ookay… are you happy with your manufacturer?
The other designer: yeah, really.
I: wonderful, would you mind sharing your contacts? I’ve been looking to establish a new contact for my textiles.
The other designer: Yes I would mind, I’m not telling you.
I: oh uh um ok. Well, here’s my manufacturers, if you need to change or have a second option, contact them and tell Tiina said hi.
The other designer: cool
But you know, that’s how it is. Do you feel that other designers happily share their sources, or pricing terms, or marketing strategies? No, I didn’t think so.
Designers don’t share their secrets. You cool with this?
I come from the Engineering world, where we always do stuff together, we share our resources and help each other out. That’s how I’m used to doing business.
How about you? Do you feel the designer community is supportive of each another?
That’s why we have opened the Academy. Join us.
* Nope, we were not really competitors. We both had very specific target clients, and very different styles so whoever likes my stuff, would never buy her stuff, and vice versa.
